Infant Language Study

       If you are pregnant, you and your baby are invited to participate in a language study for the next few years.  There is no cost to participate — all marterials are provided without charge.  Your household must be an exclusively English speaking household.  When your baby is born he or she needs to hear our basic language CDs from birth to about the age 2 or 3 -- preferrably for a couple of hours a day.    
 
       When your child is about 1 year old,  you will be sent additional material -- 100 sets of images on cards and associated CDs.  When a CD is played, a child (from about the age of 14 months) can follow the spoken words with the images on the cards (please see the sample below).  These are designed to be a learning experience for your child and it should be fun -- your child should not be forced to use these materials. 
    
         You do not have to sign a consent form and do not have to provide any personal medical information.  You need to make arrangements with the hospital to play our basic CDs from the first day of life of your child.  It is suggested that you bring a portable CD player with you to the hospital for this purpose -- if you do not have a portable CD player, we can lend you one. 
    
          To participate, please call us at (800) 872-5244 or email us.  We need your name, your email address, your mailing address and your EDD (estimated delivery date).  We need to get our basic language CDs (about 18 hours of audio material) to you before your EDD so that your baby can hear them in the hospital.   If you wish, you can interact with other mothers who are part of the study through a forum.

         Use of the test results is for publication purposes only and individual results will not be disclosed or published.  Participants can elect withdraw from the study at any time and can decline to provide test results to us without penalty.  The email addresses obtained will only be used for this study.  This study is ongoing and expectant mothers will be accepted at any time.  Regarding the use of human subjects for testing, you, your doctor or your hospital can contact us about our compliance with 5 U.S.C. 301; 42 U.S.C. 289(a); 42 U.S.C. 300v-1(b).and 56 FR 28012, 2802.
